Top Level Domain Names (TLD's)

What Is a Top Level Domain Name?

A Top Level Domain Name (TLD) is one of the domain names ending in .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info. They are called Top Level because they only have one extension prefix. Domain names such as .com.au (Australian) or .co.nz (New Zealand) domain names are known as 2nd level domain names (2LD's), because they have a 2nd extension prefix denoting the country that they are applicable to.

The Difference Between Top Level And 2nd Level Domain Names

The mostly widely known domain name type and most popular is the domain name ending in .com, followed by .net. These are the domain name extension types that are most used in the US, and the most recognised internationally. If you intend to do business overseas, then it is a good idea to register a .com domain name.

2nd Level domain names, such as .com.au or .net.au, are not known very widely in overseas markets, especially the US, however they ARE very well known in Australia.

Should I Register A TLD or A 2LD?

As a general rule, if you are intending to market your product or service via the web to overseas markets, you should definately try to register a .com domain name. If you are primarily targeting the local Australian market, and your business meets the .au domain eligibility and allocation rules then you should definately try to get a 2nd Level domain name (such as .com.au, or .net.au) and if at all possible a Top Level Domain Name to match your 2nd Level Domain name. This will allow you to enter overseas markets at a later date, as well as protect your brand identity.

As an example, we have both trueblueweb.com.au AND trueblueweb.com registered as domain names.

The major problem with Top Level domain names (especially .com) is it is getting more and more difficult to find good names that are still available. If you do have an idea for a good domain name, and you find it is still available for registration, then don't delay. A name is available this week may very well be taken next week.
